Called Into The Office
By Mark Jackson
After a lengthy meeting the previous day I was brought into my supervisor's
office.
She sat me down and said, "We need to talk." Realizing that this
was probably going to be a "you-are-inefficient" type of speech, I got comfortable and let
her speak.
Supervisor: Your behavior in the meeting yesterday was totally unacceptable.
Me: What do you mean?
S: Well, I wasn't watching you, but many people told me afterwards that you
were not paying attention during the meeting.
M: How were they paying attention during the meeting if they were watching me?
Besides, I was paying attention. I can show you my meeting notes if you'd
like.
S: Oh, I already looked through those.
M: They were in my desk drawer...
S: But that doesn't matter. What matters is you weren't paying attention.
M: Well, what are these people saying I was doing?
S: You were swiveling in your chair.
M: What?!?
S: You were swiveling in your chair and disturbing people in the meeting.
M: Why were they looking at me? I can't help the fact that I had some
energy. That's just me. I can't sit very long without moving a little.
S: Well, next time don't swivel.
M: I have to be me.
S: Maybe on your time you can, but not here. That's the company policy.
M: Being someone else is company policy?
S: No, swiveling in your chair is against company policy. Now go back to
work.
