The Bicycle Borrower
by Daniel K. Jock
...people, they will understand my brand of lifestyle...until I was workin' for the Man.
I'm not going to say the name of the cartoon, but it was one of my little brother's favorite shows and friends were psyched for me. I stopped boozing in the morning, I was bearable to be around, I was getting a routine, and I stopped buying half the amount of porn. Paid to DRAW. And then it hit me like a blow to the balls. The creator of the show cornered me in the God awful stale hallway. "Today is your last day... Actually call on Monday."
Here's what happened:
One day on a break, I saw some kids on bikes go into the Deli below the animation studio. By pure bonehead impulse, I jumped on one of the bikes and did a bunnyhop.
A couple of guys from work saw me and shook their heads. I went in, got a coffee, and chatted with co-workers. I then went back to work. About a week later, a guy was in late working and just started laughing. The creator of the show said, "What is so funny?"
"Dan got on some kids bike outside the Deli and started riding around and doing tricks. The kid came out of the deli lookin' pissed off and I told the kid, 'Don't mind him, he's got a drinking problem.'"
"Dan was riding on some kid's bike!?"
That's how I got canned from a kids cartoon for riding a bike.
